It was a joyous occasion on Saturday morning, as the restored Beaverdams Church on Marlatts Road was officially opened for business. When the Friends of Beaverdams Church (FOBC) took possession of the 193-year-old church in 2014, it needed some TLC. And little did they know then that the efforts to restore the church would be ongoing for the next 10 years. The church was originally built in 1832 by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

A chance meeting 12 years ago with an arborist caring for Pelham’s historic Comfort Maple resulted in a long partnership between Marv Enns and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Foundation (NPCF). In 2013, Enns was showing the tree to a man who had stayed with his family as a child through the Fresh Air Fund years earlier. “(He) became a lawyer, and it was really quite a nice story,” the Fenwick resident said.

This is a banner year for the Ride for Dad, with the national organization celebrating 25 years, and in Niagara, the 15th ride in the region was held Saturday morning — the best yet, with about 220 participants in what turned out to be a perfect day to tour the region on a motorcycle. “This is a really good sign for our 15th anniversary,” said ride co-chair Matt King before the start of the ride, expecting a good turnout at the Royal Canadian Legion Saturday morning.
