Fastpacks are ultralight backpacking packs with running vest straps. These bags combine features of running vests with ultralight backpacks for hiking and backpacking. We consider fastpacks anything between approx. 20–35 liters in volume that fits this description. If you’re looking for a higher-volume running vest that is slightly smaller, we have a guide for that as well: the best running backpacks.

The Outdoor Research Stratoburst Stretch Rain Jacket provides excellent weather protection, with a mechanical stretch material that is perfect for high output activities such as hiking or cycling. Another plus is that the jacket stuffs into its pocket, making it compact and easy to carry on any outing. The Stratoburst only weighs 8.5 ounces and is an excellent value at $165.

What to look for in kids’ rain gearThere’s a big difference between gear that shrugs off a drizzle and gear that stands up to a full-on downpour. Waterproof jackets and pants usually have sealed seams and protective coatings that block out serious rain. Water-resistant gear is better for quick trips or light mist, but it can’t withstand prolonged exposure. For active children, investing in fully waterproof gear ensures they stay dry and comfortable.

The Organic Full and Simple pads (the Simple is our budget pick and the same as the Full, minus some features) were our favorites to use in nearly every climbing scenario, thanks to their stellar performance. The Full pad felt extremely comfortable to land on, was easy to haul from our car to the crag, and once it was at the bottom of the boulder, it wasn’t too tough to move around either. The biggest reason why the Organic Full Pad stood out so much was for its fall comfort.
