A Norwin High School junior who is in the Aspiring Educators program at Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center is headed to Atlanta this summer for a national Skills USA competition in the early childhood education category. Avery Waszo, 17, of North Huntingdon, qualified for the state Skills USA Championship in Atlanta by winning the early childhood education category at the Pennsylvania Skills USA Championship in Hershey last month.

The reboot button pressed Tuesday kicks into gear two days later as the WPIAL baseball and softball teams in Class 3A, 2A and A finally begin their postseasons after rain wiped out their earlier attempts. On Wednesday, three 5A baseball games and two 4A softball contests were wiped away and rescheduled for Thursday.

The Gateway school board will see at least three new faces next year, as seven candidates are competing for four open seats. Sitting board President Leslie McBride is the only incumbent who has filed for reelection. Current terms for board members Jack Bova, Robin Mungo and Mandal Singh are up this year. Singh has filed to run for Monroeville mayor. All seven school board candidates are cross-filed for the May 20 primary election and will appear on both Democratic and Republican ballots.

Monroeville officials plan to improve residents’ access to Westmoreland Heritage Trail. But the precise form access will take has yet to be finalized, especially after the cost of one approach doubled in price. Council on Tuesday night voted to pursue a $250,000 state grant, which would be combined with a $243,000 grant they already have in hand for the project.
