Whether that lifestyle continues as it has for generations now depends on how the Georgia Supreme Court interprets language in the state’s constitution. The justices heard oral arguments Wednesday in an appeal of a lower-court ruling that blocked an October 2024 citizens’ referendum organized by Sapelo’s Gullah Geechee residents.

All is quiet on the docks of Anchored Shrimp Co. this time of year. Fishing trawlers sit idle, the only activity the comings and goings of captains and mechanics who board to repair and replace gear or tune engines. The shrimping season is closed to allow the white and brown crustaceans time to spawn and grow in size. Come late May or early June, when state officials give the go-ahead to drop and drag nets again, the catch is expected to be robust.

TYBEE ISLAND ― Promoters don’t expect juicy profits from Orange Crush, an HBCU spring break beach bash planned for April 19 along the Georgia coast. They’re prohibited from selling anything other than water and event merchandise. The music and dancing must wrap before dark. Attendee parking is limited. And they can’t fence off a section of the beach and charge admission.

One exception is a historic building along Bay Street, once home to a notoriously rowdy nightclub. Closed for nine years, the space recently reopened with a new occupant, the Savannah Technical College’s culinary arts and pastry arts programs, with potential that reaches beyond its walls.
