A young man from Raleigh has had a long 11 months in coming back from a traumatic brain injury. John Walter, 19, was in a coma in WakeMed's intensive care unit for weeks following the June 18 crash on Falls River Drive in a north Raleigh neighborhood. Walter was one of several patients celebrated by WakeMed on Thursday in a recognition of those who overcame life-altering injuries thanks to their medical teams. His perseverance is a fitting tribute during National Trauma Awareness Month.

A tiny dog has gone down a hard road, even though he can barely walk. The pup was recently found abandoned outside the Wake County Animal Center. The Yorkshire Terrier was found in a box outside the shelter, according to Perfectly Imperfect Pups, a dog foster service advocating for the dog, whom they have named "Benji."He was missing one of his front legs and had a broken back leg. Video of the dog shows him struggle to prop himself up and get around.

Raleigh's newest recreation option held a sneak peek for select families ahead of the June 6 grand opening. North Carolina schools are preparing to move troves of student and teacher data from the recently hacked PowerSchool into a new system in the coming weeks, Infinite Campus. The new system must be vetted for cybersecurity, the same way PowerSchool was, under North Carolina law. Infinite Campus has met those compliance standards, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, just like PowerSchool did.
