Chicago’s Christian leaders know their congregations may be feeling hopeless and beaten down. Many of them are planning to address that feeling in their Easter Sunday sermons, urging hope and optimism in the face of fear, anxiety and uncertainty. “We live in a world today where people experience so many different challenges and obstacles and all kinds of other things, and the message of Easter is all about hope,” said the Rev. Ed Howe of St. Hedwig Church in Logan Square.

It’s a gloomy, cold Wednesday morning but you’d never know it watching Vivian Mumaw dashing across a brightly-lit indoor pickleball court, with a paddle in one hand. Mumaw lives near Lake View’s Southport Corridor and is part of a weekly league at SPF in Lincoln Park, one of the largest indoor pickleball facilities in Chicago, according to the company. She plays at SPF about four to five times a week and started playing there when it opened in January. “They’ve got a lot of courts,” Mumaw said.

Marc Byrnes remembers the day he opened his property tax bill this summer to find it had quadrupled from the previous installment. “I think a fair number of people would have damned near had a heart attack when they read what I received,” Byrnes said. The bill had gone from $1,162.32 due in March to $4,706.75 due in August. Byrnes had a sense his property tax bill would likely be increasing after chatting in June with a neighbor whose bill had gone up several thousand dollars.

During the Chicago Marathon weekend, tables turn over quickly at Sofi, an Italian restaurant in Printers Row, as carb-loading runners stuff themselves with pasta. The race boosts business by 300%, said owner Maurizio Michi, who expects 600-800 customers on Saturday, the eve of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. It’s the biggest event of the year in terms of customer volume for Sofi at 616 S. Dearborn St., not far from the starting line in Grant Park.
