BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Baseball legends piled into Birmingham Thursday for the second-annual East-West Classic baseball game. This year, the game took place at historic Rickwood Field as MLB celebrates Juneteenth and honors the Negro Leagues. Legends such as CC Sabathia headlined the West team, while the East featured 2008 champion with the Phillies Ryan Howard, Alabama native Jake Peavy and more. Howard played for the Phillies from 2004-2016.

(WIAT) — Barry McNealy, a historian with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, joined the CBS 42 Morning News to discuss the importance of Juneteenth. “Well when we talk about Juneteenth, we connect it to the Emancipation Proclamation that was issued after President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order designed to free people who were enslaved in parts of the union that were in rebellion to the United States of America,” McNealy explained.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Former Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley announced Thursday that he’s retiring from the NFL. Mosley took to Instagram to make the announcement. He played 11 years in the league, five for the Baltimore Ravens, and five with the New York Jets. Mosley was selected with the 17th pick in the first round by Baltimore in the 2014 NFL Draft. He finishes his career with 1,082 total tackles, 12 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions, and two touchdowns.
