To the Editor:Summer brings more bicyclists onto the county’s roads and bike paths; most of them need to learn safety rules to stay alive. For example, on June 15 in the afternoon, a mindless couple was biking east as I drove west on Sandman Boulevard in Cold Spring. They sailed through the red traffic signal at Shunpike Road. Had a vehicle been speeding, both would have become casualties. Additionally, neither the man nor the woman wore a helmet.

To the Editor:As February slips into history and we mark the end of another Black History Month, let us remember a lady from Cape May Court House who once was memorialized by having her name on a section of the Middle Township Bike Path: Vera Lennon. Each time I bike past the corner of the Carl O. Baker Recreation Building at the Davies Sports Complex, I remember the day when there was fanfare to remember Mrs.

CREST HAVEN – Five superior officers in the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, represented by Police Benevolent Association Local 401, had a collective bargaining agreement confirmed by the county Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The four-year pact is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2023, and continues until Dec. 31, 2026.

CREST HAVEN – “This is new and unacceptable,” stated County Commissioner Will Morey on Thursday, Jan. 4, as the Board of County Commissioners reorganized. He objected to the way department assignments were made. Those assignments, he said, were not discussed at prior meetings, according to the board’s rules. He abstained from the selection of Commissioner Director Leonard Desiderio to that post as well as to that of Commissioner Vice-Director Andrew Bulakowski. Both received the needed four votes.

When is the best time for a public meeting? The answer depends on who asks and who responds. Recently, the Herald newsroom asked about meeting times for the Cape May County Board of County Commissioners. The body meets twice monthly on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 3 p.m. Frequently, the board will also conduct a caucus meeting before those meetings at 2 p.m.All are public meetings. However, the public is not permitted to speak at the caucus. The public may address the board at regular meetings.
Fare Free Transit Study Given Green Light; Airport Remediation Finally Ends

CREST HAVEN – Fitzgerald & Halliday Inc., a planning consulting firm based in Hartford, Connecticut, was awarded a $187,000 contract by the Cape May County Board of County Commissioners to produce a study of the Fare Free Transportation Service. The award took place at the Tuesday, Dec. 19, board meeting. The resolution, which noted that the firm does business as FHI Studio, was chosen as the better of the two firms that submitted proposals on Oct. 25.

When we think about Christmas, it’s logical that we often think of the toys we got as children. Everyone remembers wanting a particular toy. Sometimes, the wonder of seeing that unique bike, skates or set of electric trains under the Christmas tree remains in one’s memory decades after that special day. We may recall Christmas morning (or maybe Christmas Eve) when presents were exchanged, and there was a room filled almost to overflowing with presents.

CREST HAVEN – Cape May County Commissioners eye the end of 2023 as they prepare for reorganization on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at 4 p.m. at the Cape May County Technical High School, 188 Crest Haven Road. The public is invited to attend the event, which is ceremonial yet historically well-attended. The all-Republican board will welcome newcomer Melanie Collette, who received 17,262 votes in the November election. She will be the first African American to join the body that oversees county government.
Two Law Enforcement Units' Contracts OK'd; Board Reappoints Deputy Fire Marshals

CREST HAVEN – The Cape May County Board of County Commissioners approved contracts Tuesday, Nov. 28, with two bargaining units representing the Prosecutor’s Office and the Correctional Center members. Both contracts were unanimously approved without comment. The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office Superior Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 contract covers the captain and three lieutenants at the Correctional Center. It continues from Jan. 1, 2024, to Dec. 31, 2028.
