Laois PPN in collaboration with SVT Activity & Wellness Hub, welcomed a large number of PPN Member Group attendees to ‘Sunset Cycle’ event recently. This was held during ‘Bike Week 2025’ to promote the benefits of Active Travel as part of our Climate Action Project. There was a wide variety of events held during ‘Bike Week 2025’ across towns and villages in Laois and the across the Country.

HIQA have halted new admission to the Laois nursing home featured in last night’s RTE Investigates programme. There was widespread shock and outrage last night after undercover RTE investigators captured several incidents of poor practice at The Residence in Portlaoise. Throughout the programme, various incidents of staffing and equipment shortages left to residents being left neglected.

The All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships took place in Tullamore last weekend and a number of Laois students excelled. Laois students in Colaiste Iosagain, Portlaoise CBS, Heywood, St Leo’s College (Carlow) and Kilkenny College all took part over two days. Four Laois athletes returned home with medals while another group were successful in a relay event. We had two individual gold medals with Portlaoise CBS’ Dan Downey taking first place in the Inter Boys 400m hurdles.

Independent Republican TD for Laois, Brian Stanley, raised the situation surrounding three flood relief schemes planned for the county in the Dail recently. Addressing Minister Boxer Moran, Deputy Stanley highlighted the schemes regarding Clonaslee, Mountmellick and Portarlington. He said: “There are three flood relief schemes in Laois, in Clonaslee, Mountmellick and Portarlington. In relation to Clonaslee, Deputy Stanley said that the process is ‘taking too long’.
