Laois senior hurling manager Tommy Fitzgerald has named his team for their Joe McDonagh Cup opener against Westmeath. Laois are at home for the first game on Saturday in O’Moore Park at 3pm. And ahead of the game, Laois appear to have recovered the majority of the players who picked up injuries during the National League. Cha Dwyer and Paddy Purcell have been named to start after missing the last couple of rounds of the league.

The venue for two Laois Ladies games has been changed following the deluge of rain that has fallen in the last 12 hours. The games were scheduled to take place in the Centre of Excellence in Portlaoise but have now been switched to Annanough. Up first, the Laois U-16 team are in a Leinster ‘B’ semi final against Westmeath. That game throws in at 2pm and the winner will face the winner of Meath and Louth in the final. While the second part of the double header is the Leinster Minor ‘B’ semi final.

A Laois athlete has broken an Irish record that has stood for the last 19 years. Mountmellick’s Ava O’Connor is now the holder of the U-23 national record for the 3000m steeplechase. She achieved the feat at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California, running a time of 9:46.22 to break the previous record by three seconds. That record was held since 2006 by Fionnuala McCormack – who went on to compete at five Olympic Games.

The case for additional stops and even a third route for the Portlaoise Bus Service was made at a meeting yesterday. Members of the Portlaoise Municipal District, in two separate motions, have called for the service to be expanded. The current service has two routes with a combined total of 42 stops. Firstly, Fine Gael Councillor Paddy Buggy asked for an additional stop to be installed at the retirement village in Kilminchy.
