Mountrath Community School was a hive of activity on Friday last as the TY GAA Future Leaders students hosted their now annual ‘Future Leaders, Future Stars’ Event. Well over 100 first year students took part in the day which consisted of fun games, a 7-a-side ladies football tournament and a 7-a-side boys hurling tournament. The TY students took on the various roles of event managers, coaches and officials.

The Portarlington Community Development Association (PCDA) has called for a comprehensive feasibility study to explore the potential for locating a regional sports complex in the town. The group have formally written to local TDs and Laois County Council CEO Michael Rainey, advancing their plan for what they say would be a €25 million facility. And, they say that their proposal should be preferred over any similar suggestion for Portlaoise.

Laois manager Justin McNulty was pleased that his side got the victory on Saturday in Round 1 of the Tailteann Cup against Waterford. While elements of the performance weren’t up to the standard, McNulty conceded that Laois had little to gain from a match they were overwhelming favourites for. He said: “We’re in the Tailteann Cup and we don’t necessarily like that, but it is what it is and we’ve got to prepare for every game.

It was a day of celebration in the Holy Family Senior School on Friday as they gathered to celebrate their third annual Europe Day. Every year, on May 9, Europe Day is celebrated across the continent to mark the peace and unity between countries dating back to 1964. Approximately 150 students from 3rd and 6th class came together to showcase what they have learned about Europe through projects, artworks and scrapbooks.
