COVINGTON — Newton County commissioners were not convinced that an events facility on 10 acres on Duncan Road should be given a Conditional Use Permit. Property owners Richard and Devin Lubin told commissioners at their May 6 meeting that they plan to use an existing barndominium on the property at 910 Duncan Road as an event space. COVINGTON — A decision by the Newton County Board of Commissioners to object to a proposed annexation and request arbitration by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs triggered a process that could take as long as two months. If the DCA accepts Newton County’s petition for arbitration, the agency will appoint a five-person panel to hear the annexation objection. The panel is required to be set within 15 days of DCA’s receipt of the county’s objection to the annexation.

COVINGTON — A request to annex 520 acres abutting Lake Varner for construction of a massive data center campus and residential development will go before an arbitration panel following a “no” vote by the Newton County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night. Commissioners met for about an hour in closed session before deciding to adopt a resolution objecting to the annexation of the property into the city of Covington.

COVINGTON — The city of Covington has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit by a former city firefighter who was dismissed after he “admitted sending a nude photograph of his male genitalia to a third party while he was on duty …,” according to the motion. Former battalion chief Kevin Whitley was fired by the city Sept. 16, 2024, based on a number of alleged violations of city and Covington Fire Department policies.
