Rockdale County residents went to bed Monday night under the impression that a shelter-in-place order had been lifted following Sunday’s massive chemical fire at a local plant. But come Tuesday morning, the news was less conclusive and notably confusing. The county’s 90,000 residents woke up to learn some were still in harm’s way, and the order was back on — at least for some.

Before heading to work Monday, Matthew Todd checked out the official City of Atlanta account on the social media app X, looking for any updates or air-quality advisories following Sunday’s massive chemical fire 20 miles east in Conyers. “I read about the fire, saw the pictures, of course, and immediately thought, well, that’s not that far away,” said Todd, who was concerned about Day 2 impacts following the fire at BioLab, a plant that treats pool and spa water.

Georgians have the right to obtain public records directly from private organizations with government contracts, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled this week, overturning lower court rulings that allowed contractors to dodge record requests. The decision is being celebrated as a win for transparency, as well as reinforcement of rules already in place under the Georgia Open Records Act.
