    Shannon Brown, the president of Undergraduate Student Government, resigned from the position Wednesday, according to a letter sent to USG members and obtained by The Kent Stater. Brown’s resignation is effective immediately. Vice President Jessie Starkey will assume the office of president, according to the memo. “Thank you for granting me the opportunity to serve in this position for the last eight months as your Student Body President,” Brown said in the letter.

    Kent can expect its share of snow this week. The National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow warning for Portage County as an Arctic front crosses the region tonight. As much as 10 inches of snow may hit the region from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 4 a.m. Friday. An initial band of heavy snow will likely drop an inch or two on the region. During the storm, driving conditions may quickly worsen with visibility at ¼ mile or less.

    Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a state of emergency Tuesday for Northeast Ohio counties hit by heavy snowstorms since Friday. The state of emergency covers Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties, which are under several feet of snow after a series of lake-effect snowstorms. Also on Tuesday, Kent State Ashtabula canceled classes for the second day this week. The campus has received more than 36.5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

    After a campaign mired in controversy, Sherrif Bruce Zuchowski (R) will defeat Jon Barber (D) in the race for Portage County Sheriff. Zuchowski won with 40,029 votes compared with Barber’s 38,831 votes. Zuchowski made national headlines for a now-deleted Facebook post encouraging people to write down the addresses with signs supporting Vice President Kamala Harris.

    As voters flowed in and out of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, where two polling places were set up Tuesday for the election, the result of an exhaustive campaign was on full display. Caitlyn Dory, a second year psychology major, said she felt scared voting for her first time. Leading up to the election, she said she and her family experienced a rift over their preferred candidates. She chose to vote separately from them. “I didn’t want to make the wrong choice,” Dory said.
