While the initial days of snow and sleet last week passed without major incident, those who wanted to test the roadways may have found themselves turned back — if they didn’t find themselves stuck. By Thursday, local officials and first responders were asking residents to stay off of the roads because of their slippery nature.

The Hamburg City Council decided what approach they were going to take regarding the purchase of a trash collection vehicle at their regular January meeting. The council members were presented several different elements to consider that they each took part in discussing at length regarding the city’s future methods of trash collection.

Over the weekend, a determined group of people made their way through the winter weather so they could be in Crossett to celebrate Cora Mae Summers’ 100th birthday. Family members and groups of friends turned out for the festivities at the First Baptist Church Multi Ministry Building on Pine Street in Crossett on Jan. 21. Summers is the oldest member of American Legion Post 111 in Crossett, and several of her fellow veterans were on hand to celebrate with her at her party as well.

Hamburg Mayor David Streeter gave his annual State of the City 2024 Address on Jan. 22. Streeter began by discussing changes made that created a new evidence room in the Police Department at City Hall. The space that previously served as the old police jails now contains two offices, a drop-off area for the evidence room, and an armory. The changes made it easier to keep all police-related materials separated from other areas within City Hall, he said.

A fire on North Binns Loop resulted in the destruction of the North Crossett residence over the weekend. Several large booms could be heard in the area after the fire erupted in the residence’s carport on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 13. One witness who lives down the street from where the fire occurred said she heard a loud boom and went outside to see what had happened. That was when she realized that the house down the street was on fire, she said.
