GEORGIA — State education officials are working to consolidate Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College in efforts to reinvest funding and expand academically. University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue announced this week that he was recommending the merge to the Board of Regents. The board will vote during an upcoming meeting, held between Tuesday and Wednesday. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges would get the final approval.

ORANGE COUNTY, FL — A man convicted of murder who was mistakenly released from the Clayton County Jail this week was caught in Florida, according to a media report. Clayton County prosecutors say Kathan Guzman, who was convicted of murder in October 2024, was released Tuesday from jail in an error. The U.S. Marshal's Service on Friday arrested Guzman in Orange County, where he is awaiting extradition, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida authorities are warning of the dangers of leaving children, pets and others unattended in hot cars. This comes on the heels of Hot Car Death Prevention Month in April, which was established after the July 2023 death of Ariya Paige, 10 months old. Ariya Paige died after her babysitter allegedly left her inside of a hot car for five hours, the Florida Highway Safety of Motor Vehicles said in a news release on Thursday.
