FLORIDA — More than 20 tons of Burmese pythons have been removed from Southwest Florida in recent years, including a record-breaking 6,300 pounds of the invasive snake, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida said Monday. The organization said the latest record sets a new milestone for its python program. At least 20 tons of Burmese pythons have been extracted within 200 square miles since 2013. The conservancy, headquartered in Naples, serves Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties.

FLORIDA — Six Florida residents who hit the jackpot in the Florida Lottery have turned a few dollars into millions. Lottery officials on Monday announced the winners of recent massive prizes. This included a 37-year-old Weston man who claimed a whomping $10.75 million in the Florida Lotto game. The man won the sizeable jackpot on March 8 after buying the winning tick from a Sheridan Street gas station in Southwest Ranches, lottery officials said.

ATLANTA, GA — Five measles cases have now been reported in Georgia, closing in on the previous six cases recorded in 2024. The Georgia Department of Public Health on Friday said an unvaccinated resident is the second measles case in metro Atlanta and the fifth overall in the state. The person contracted the highly contagious virus from a family member who was diagnosed with the measles in May, the DPH said.

LAGRANGE, GA β A shooting in LaGrange left a man dead, and six others injured, Sunday at a house party, media reports say. LaGrange Police identified the man as Javeon Dukes, 19, who died shortly after arriving at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center, according to both news outlets. Six other people were treated at hospitals, and some of them have since been released, the Daily News reported.

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia could be the focus of more severe storms Monday after a weekend system killed a man and left at least 200,000 people in the dark. A storm that hit Georgia on Saturday, taking out electricity across metro Atlanta, killed 56-year-old Carnesville man Jason Payne, WXIA-TV reported. Payne was in a 2000 Nissan Altima, driving east on GA-51 around 7 p.m. in Banks County when a tree fell on top of the car, the news outlet reported. He was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene.
