Commencement ceremonies begin at UW-Madison

MADISON (WKOW) -- It's graduation time for many college students. UW-Madison kicked off its commencement ceremonies Friday. The Friday evening ceremony at the Kohl Center was for students getting doctoral, MFA and medical professional degrees. One student who just got her PhD in microbiology couldn't contain her excitement when she spoke about her accomplishment. "Oh, I feel amazing. It's one of the biggest successes. I'm the first generation reaching higher education.

MADISON (WKOW) -- The March of Dimes Walk was held in Madison Tuesday to raise awareness and support for maternal and infant health. It kicked off at Dean Health Plan offices on Deming Way. According to the March of Dimes, in 2023, 1 in 10 babies was born preterm in Wisconsin. That's an average of 113 babies per week. Nicole Abendroth, a mom from De Pere, shared her story at the walk of giving birth to triplets at 24 weeks and losing one of them.

According to the Wisconsin Cranberry Board's harvest report, the state produced a little more than 6 million barrels of cranberries in 2024. That's good for more than 60 percent of the nation's cranberry supply. The berries were grown on more than 25,000 acres across 19 counties.

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is beginning its annual spongy moth treatment. Small airplanes are going to spray a natural soil bacteria that kills spongy moth caterpillars. That treatment will happen over parts of Grant, Buffalo and Pepin Counties. Officials say the bacteria doesn't hurt people, bees, pets or other animals, but people with severe allergies might want to stay inside while during treatment applications.

Hundreds came out to the Madison Concourse Hotel to support the lifesaving mission. The money raised funds critical research and goes towards initiatives to improve health outcomes for everyone, everywhere. The Minter family was honored at this year's Heart Ball. 6-year-old Emmy was born with a congenital heart defect and had open heart surgery as a baby.
