    Scientists have discovered that the cause for Alzheimer’s could potentially be coming from the inside of people’s mouths. A paper submitted by University of Louisville microbiologist Jan Potempa, found that there is a link between gum disease and Alzheimer’s. The pathogen behind chronic gum disease (a condition known officially as periodontitis) was also found in the brains of deceased Alzheimer’s patients.

    The long-awaited new helipad project at Cork University Hospital (CUH) has finally been completed, with operational testing taking place today. The hospital’s CEO, David Donegan, welcomed pilots and crews from the HSE and air corps and will welcome coastguard personnel tomorrow. CUH was also supported by colleagues from the National Ambulance Service and Cork Fire Service in undertaking the tests.

    Cork County GAA Board has secured planning permission for a strategic housing development (SHD) on the northern fringes of Cork city – a project which it says will provide “much-needed housing on the northside of the city, while using the sale of the site to reduce the debts of Cork GAA”. The site is located next to the Old Whitechurch Road in Kilbarry and the proposed development includes 319 homes, a crèche and riverside park.

    A recently elected Cork city councillor has welcomed the removal of old “eyesore” phone boxes from the city centre, calling for the remainder of them to be “removed without delay”. Social Democrats councillor Pádraig Rice said it was particularly welcome to see the removal of the phone box on George’s Quay and at Paul Street. “I’m delighted to see some of the disused phone boxes removed,” Mr Rice told . “This is something I have been calling for.
