Progress has been made in works to prevent salmon becoming trapped in the waters around a hydro-electric plant on the River Lee and on Wednesday the owner was given the benefit of a dismissal of one charge under the Probation Act. Judge Joanne Carroll made this decision on one of the charges brought by Inland Fisheries Ireland against Dan Twomey who has a hydro facility on the River Lee, south of the old Cork waterworks and directly across the river from the Kingsley Hotel.

A Mallow man who held on to a €15,000 batch of bad-quality cannabis from a friend would have been better off flushing it down the toilet rather than putting himself at risk, a sentencing judge told the 45-year-old. Detective Garda William Hosford testified at Cork Circuit Criminal Court that on February 10, 2023, gardaí went to the home of Patrick Buckley, at 16 Sandfield Terrace, Mallow, Co Cork, with a warrant to conduct a drugs search.

A drug-induced psychosis caused a man to hear voices and ultimately set fire to the family home. 37-year-old Robert Sheehan, of 58 Innishannon Road, Fair Hill, Cork, was before Cork Circuit Criminal Court for sentencing on Wednesday, having pleaded guilty to the crime. A French fisherman’s failure to record details of all of the fishing he was carrying out off the coast of Ireland cost him a total of €42,500. Ludovic Guennec was represented in Cork Circuit Criminal Court by solicitor Diarmuid Conway and a plea of guilty was entered to the charge stating that on May 18 within the exclusive fishery limits of the State, as master of the sea-fishing boat, Astrid, he did fail to retain onboard catches of seafish species which are subject to catch limits.
