Sitting in the darkly-lit, clubby room listening to K-pop music and drinking soju, you'd have no idea that the new Rockstar Korean BBQ used to be a diner. Unless you're from Valley Stream or have driven down Sunrise Highway in Nassau, where you might have seen the previous tenant along the Long Island Rail Road tracks. The high-visibility spot was built in 1951 and had been the Concord Diner for decades until it closed in 2014, not long after the death of one of its owners, Athanasios Cheliotis.

If there's such a thing as an omakase bandwagon, this newly rebranded Long Beach restaurant is on it. Himawari Sushi on Park Avenue just got a face-lift and is now sporting a bright orange sign with a new name, Oishi Omakase. It now offers chef-guided omakase dinners as well as an all-you-can-eat sushi deal. Owner Jimmy Lin wanted to distinguish the place from its larger sister restaurant Himawari Asian Pan down the street, he said at the restaurant during a recent evening.

Kabab may be in the name, but this new Afghan restaurant is all about the carbohydrates. Balkh Kabab House, which opened on Merrick Road in Valley Stream this January, is an offshoot of a longtime Astoria restaurant Balkh Shish Kabab House.

The chefs prepared their own compound butters and also oversaw the aging of steaks, working together with Babylon Village Meat Market. But the intimate restaurant currently on Newsday’s list of best Long Island steakhouses closed its doors Tuesday.

Long Island's north and south shores are filled with restaurants that thrive, come summer, with diners who seek al fresco tables with a prime view of sunset or boats churning by.

This was one of the most impressive all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue restaurants I've tried, not just because the meat quality was so high, but because of this cast iron grill. https://t.co/ete3utAsgg
