She whipped around to see her friend on the opposite end of the tennis court ducking and dodging the high bounce of baseball that had hit the court about a foot away from her. They had been playing a doubles match, members of a USTA league team getting some practice on two of Canyon View Park’s four north courts on a beautiful April 7 evening. The team even considered themselves fortunate to get courts 14 and 15 that Monday. “Those were the only courts available in town,” Thornton said.

If the other guys are getting snacks — buckets full of edible inducement to get Sr. Loin, Kenny and J’Quan into their halters and loaded up for an event — then Redbull is craning his neck wanting the other calves’ food. He wants it even when he already has his halter on, is all ready to go and had his own treats. “He’s a foodie,” said Sydney Fonte, a sophomore at Colorado Mesa University and vice president of the Rowdy Wranglers. Until Thursday, Redbull had to share snacks and treats.

In the coming days, residents will move into the downtown apartment building, leaving chronic homelessness behind and opening the door to a place they can call their own. The front exterior of the Mother Teresa Place is seen on April 11.
