Monday was a day to remember. It was a day for red, white and blue, salutes and thoughtful words, for remembering those who died while serving our country. Memorial Day began with a morning wreath floating ceremony along the Colorado River by the local branch of the Fleet Reserve Association and a memorial service and flyover at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. It continued with an afternoon event at the Western Region One Source and another event at Palisade Memorial Park.

Marley Abbott was pretty thrilled about the dunk tank that was part of her 9th birthday party on SundayMay 25. Who will be in the tank? “Me mostly,” she promptly said with a grin during an interview last week. Since she’s a softball player, it will be a softball-themed party with a red velvet cake, sunflower seeds and Cracker Jacks. Her birthday falls on Memorial Day weekend, however with the dunk in the offing, the holiday wasn’t the first thing on her mind.

On Saturday, May 17, CMU confer 1,668 degrees on 1,478 graduates during two ceremonies The keynote speaker will be Ben Steele, a CMU graduate and tight ends coach for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL. Here are some 2025 graduate details from CMU: Of the degrees awarded, there will be 489 certificates, 191 associate, 901 baccalaureate, 4 graduate certificates and 83 masters. 441 are CMU Tech students receiving 547 degrees or certificates. 44% of CMU’s spring 2025 graduates are first generation.

The Rowdy Brass Band will play from noon to 1 p.m. today on the stage at Fifth and Main streets during the Rides and Vibes festival downtown. Rowdy Brass also will play a show at 7:30 p.m. today at Asteria Theatre, 864 Bunting Ave. This show will include the Mesa Brass Band, which similar to Rowdy Brass and was formed because of the popularity of the original band.

Homecoming + Farewell: Mesa OutLoud! Reunion Concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Robinson Theatre in Colorado Mesa University’s Moss Performing Arts Center, 1221 N. 12th St. It will feature both CMU students and alumni as director Jeremy Franklin’s prepares to move on to new opportunities and the vocal ensemble Mesa OutLoud! goes on hiatus.
