    MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Philadelphia Animal Control was awarded a no-kill shelter plaque for the year 2022 by The Best Friends Animal Society. The shelter prides itself in being one of the few no-kill shelters in the area. Arthur Breakfield, Supervisor of Animal Control said he had six animals himself and that each employee there has a passion for the animals they work with. The group primarily uses social media and some other websites to find homes for the animals.

    MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - United Way of East Mississippi and EC HealthNet hosted its Breast Cancer Power Walk on Friday. Participants showed up in pink to raise awareness for the cause. The group started on 14th Avenue and made a few blocks around the medical district in Meridian. Proceeds will go to the Cancer Benevolence Fund and help local cancer patients. ”We are very excited that EC HealthNet asked to partner with us for this event.

    MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Over 155 members of the Class of 2027 signed the “Cougar Commitment” banner on Wednesday morning. This banner will be placed at the entrance of the school and moved to the commencement platform at graduation in May of 2027. NCHS Principal Nick Smith welcomed the students and challenged each to do what it takes to graduate. He also shared a bit of family history and the sacrifices made for him to get an education.

    MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The East Neshoba Fire Protection District’s rating has changed from Class 9 to Class 8. A lower rating deems the community safer and will give homeowners a lower insurance rate. Over the past four years, the district has been upgrading equipment and decreasing its response times to get the rating down. Ray Crocker, Chairman of the East Neshoba County Fire Department Committee said the district was happy to be able to save homeowners some money.
