Seventeen CSX train cars derailed in Smyrna early Friday morning, sending thousands of pounds of cargo spilling out onto the side of the tracks. No injuries were reported and no hazardous material was dumped, according to Smyrna Fire Lt. Evan McBrayer. He said the cars that crashed were carrying dry goods, many hauling lumber.

Cobb County may pay $300,000 to a woman who said she suffered serious physical, emotional and financial harm after she was rear-ended by an off-duty Cobb County police officer in a marked department vehicle in 2022. If rubber-stamped by the Board of Commissioners Tuesday, Cobb will enter a settlement with Johanna Barreto for two lawsuits filed in Cobb State Court in 2024, one against the county and the other against Cobb Police Officer Evan Gammons in his individual capacity.

McBrayer said all cargo was spilled onto CSX-owned property, near Campbell Road and Nancy Circle, and that Smyrna Fire was only monitoring the cleanup.
