The former assistant manager of Hardware Sales has pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges related to embezzling more than $1.4 million from the Bellingham-based business. Amy Siniscarco pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false tax return on April 3 in the Western District of Washington, according to court records.

An 18-year-old man accused of shooting and killing another 18-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm in Whatcom County Superior Court Friday, May 30. Cristian Lara Guzman allegedly shot Alejandro Pallares, a Ferndale High School senior, on Sunday, May 18. Pallares spent a week on life support at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center before dying from his injuries on May 25.

Light rain didn’t dampen the spirits of Trader Joe’s crew members and shoppers waiting in line for the newest grocery store location to open Thursday morning. Add in the Meridian High School marching band playing pop hits and people were practically dancing in the rain. The second location at 4233 Meridian St., the site of the former Bed Bath & Beyond, has been the subject of much speculation after building permits were filed last summer.

EVERSON — In a patch of grass at Riverside Park, a handful of boys helped place canoes upside down next to each other. The work started steadily but picked up in the late afternoon as Ski to Sea team members offloaded canoes to be watched overnight. The boys, members of Scout Troop 4027 who range in age from 11 to 17, pitched tents among the 400 canoes and spent the night sleeping lightly, their ears pricked for any kind of noise that could signal trouble.
