The Chilliwack Progress
The Chilliwack Progress holds the title of being the oldest community newspaper in British Columbia that has continuously operated under the same name in its original location. It began its journey in April 1891, with its very first edition printed on four pages of aging newsprint from a small press owned by W.T. Jackman, which he had set up above a farm supply store on Main Street. Today, the Progress has grown and is published twice a week.

Dryer than usual days were still the norm for May weather in Chilliwack. "The unusually dry conditions, since the first week of April, continued until mid-May," according to Roger Pannett, Chilliwack's volunteer weather observer for Environment and Climate Change Canada. During a 32-day period, only 12.4 millimetres of rain fell, which only accounted for 10.4 per cent of the 30-year average from 1951 to 1980.
