The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. in the area of 19th Street and Eighth Avenue, according to the East Moline Police Department. Authorities sent the wounded person to MercyOne Genesis Silvis Medical Center for treatment.     A Rock Island County jury deliberated for about an hour and 15 minutes Friday before returning a verdict of guilty against Derrick B. Nephew in the May 2024 shooting death of Omari Braxton. Nephew, 31, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the killing of Braxton, 21, which occurred about 4:45 p.m. on May 11, 2024, at the Maple Ridge Apartment Complex in the 3700 block of Fifth Street, Rock Island.

    The Rock Island County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash on Illinois Route 94 at 148th Avenue West north of Reynolds. The sheriff's office issued a warning about the crash on its social media at 9:30 a.m., but has not yet released more details. The Rock Island County Coroner's Office said the crash involved a death but further details about the person killed were not yet available. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

    In her last hours of testimony, Adriana Blake again denied participating in the killings of Brian Goodwin and Amy Smith. The 28-year-old Blake is on trial for first-degree murder and 14 other charges for the Jan. 15, 2024, shooting deaths of Goodwin and Smith. Devon Braet also is charged with the killings and is scheduled to be tried separately in June. When the killings occurred, Blake and Braet were in a relationship and staying with Goodwin at his basement apartment at 5210 N.

    A former Rock Island County employee accused of stealing nearly $1 million in public funds pleaded not guilty Tuesday. Leisa A. Streeter, 62, faces charges of theft, theft of government property, forgery, money laundering and multiple counts of official misconduct, according to Rock Island County court records. The charges allege that from 2003 through June of 2024 Steeter stole more than $900,000 from the county using a fraudulent bank account.
