A Sunday morning fire at a Bettendorf residence remains under investigation. The fire happened at about 6:40 a.m. at 2318 Central Ave., according to a city news release. The Bettendorf Fire Department received no reports of injuries and no firefighters were hurt fighting the fire. Officials continued their inquiry into the fire as of Monday morning. Property records show a single-story residence at the address.

A train hit a 40-year-old man early Monday in downtown Davenport. Authorities responded at about 2 a.m. to the 200 block of South Gaines Street to investigate a report of a person hit by a train, according to a Davenport Police Department news release. When they arrived, first responders found the man had been laying on the tracks before the train hit him, the release states. They pronounced him dead at the scene. The release did not identify the man by name.

Jury selection in trial of the man accused of taking part in a 2024 double murder in Davenport starts Monday. Devon Braet faces two charges of first-degree murder in the Jan. 15, 2024, shooting deaths of Brian L. Goodwin and Amy M. Smith. He is charged with a total of 15 crimes related to the shootings. Goodwin and Smith were found in the early morning hours of Jan. 16, 2024, after a neighbor called in a fire at 5210 N. Division St., where Goodwin rented the basement portion of a converted house.

A Nevada man received a nearly three-year federal prison sentence after being convicted on wire fraud and money-laundering charges related to a scam that cost Moline more than $400,000. Chief Judge Sara Darrow ordered Luisito Espanola, 65, of Las Vegas, to report to the Federal Bureau of Prison by June 23, according to a news release from the United State’s Attorneys Office for the Central District of Illinois.
