LAKETOWN TOWNSHIP, MI – The world’s newly elected Pope Leo XIV was chosen as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8. The first ever United States citizen chosen for the job, Cardinal Robert Prevost, is a Midwesterner born in Chicago. But according to the Chicago Sun Times, Prevost went to high school in West Michigan at St. Augustine Seminary High School.

During the nearly two-week homicide trial for former police officer Christopher Schurr, protesters shouted while protesting outside the courthouse. However, inside the courtroom, it was utterly silent as the judge declared a mistrial due to a hung jury just after 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A restaurant specializing in specialty diets is coming to Grand Rapids’ Creston neighborhood. FIKA, a plant-based and gluten-free brunch spot, will open on Plainfield Avenue in spring 2025. The restaurant will be on the ground floor of the Lofts on Grove apartments at 1359 Plainfield Ave. NE in a 3,095-square-foot space. FIKA is the newest venture for owners Becca and Nick Van Liere, who already own Rise Authentic Baking Co. on Fulton Street.

Ottawa County, MI -- Republican Jim Barry has won the Nov. 5 election to represent District 1 on the Ottawa County Board of Elections. Republican Jim Barry and Democrat Danielle Smith competed for the seat, after Barry beat incumbent Republican Gretchen Cosby for the seat in the August primary. After losing the primary to Barry, Cosby filed to run as a write-in candidate, but did not appear on the printed ballot.

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI -- Democrat Doug Zylstra has won the Nov. 5 election for the District 3 Ottawa County Board of Commissioners seat. Democrat Doug Zylstra, who has been a commissioner for three terms, was challenged for the District 3 seat by Republican Orlando Estrada, who describes himself as an entrepreneur, content creator and former legislative aide. Until recently, Zylstra was the lone Democrat on the 11-member Ottawa County Board of Commissioners.
