GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thursday will mark 10 years since the U.S. Supreme Court announced the landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, paving the way for same-sex couples to marry nationwide. In a 5-4 decision, the court ruled that same-sex marriage bans violate the liberties guaranteed by the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The ruling is arguably the biggest milestone in the LGBTQ+ community’s long fight for equal rights.

(WOOD) – In 2023, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ field office in the northern county of Montmorency received a tip about a young black bear with a container lid stuck around its neck. Biologists kept an eye out for the bear after seeing it on a trail camera. The bear, then believed to be a cub, was hard to track, however.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Rosa Parks has been gone for nearly 20 years. Her legacy lives on, and now the City of Detroit wants to ensure her longtime home will live on, as well. The Detroit News reports city officials are pushing to have the house designated as a historic property, protecting it from major changes by future owners. Rosa Parks lived in the two-story home at the corner of Virginia Park Street and Wildemere Street for 27 years, moving in in 1961.

PULLMAN, Mich. (WOOD) — The U.S. Department of Defense announced that a soldier from Allegan County has died while serving overseas in Iraq. The DOD announced Staff Sgt. Saul Fabian Gonzalez, a 26-year-old from Pullman, died on Tuesday in a non-combat related incident.
