    While walking along the beach at Stearns Park Tom Lyon and his son, Joe, would come across a beach toy here and there, the toy was undoubtedly left behind accidentally or simply fell out of a wagon that was overloaded with items for the beach. Lyon began to think of ways that those beach toys (many still in good shape) could be reused by children or families coming to spend the day along the lake Michigan shoreline.

    As the Fourth of July holiday approaches many are looking forward to a week of activities that include fireworks, parades, art fairs and good food. The Ludington Area Jaycees’ Freedom Festival activities kick off with the annual Children and Pet Parade on Wednesday, July 3rd, at the south end of Ferry Street, the line-up begins at 5 p.m. with the parade stepping off at 6 p.m. Participants will line up at the corner of Ferry and Loomis streets, the parade will head east to Waterfront Park.

    Inside, being creative was the place to be Tuesday morning — as light rains was falling outside — children were inside building creations out of cardboard boxes at Sandcastles weekly STEM Adventure program. The program is tailored for children ages 4 to 9 ( but not limited to) that intertwines STEM and literacy to spark curiosity, critical thinking and creativity to prepare children to navigate an increasingly complex world with confidence and proficiency.
