A tower built for King Henry I which has been unseen since its destruction in the English Civil War will now open to the public. Originally erected as part of the fortress constructed for William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the regal keep was added circa 1107 for Henry I, his son. The prominent structure, crafted from white Purbeck limestone, soared to a height of 75ft atop a hill 180ft high, making it visible for miles.

Police are treating a house fire in which a man aged in his 70s died and another man was hospitalised as suspicious. Emergency services were called to the property in Southdown Road, Weymouth, at 10.59am on Friday October 4. A Dorset Police spokesman said: “Officers attended the scene, along with the fire and ambulance services. Very sadly, a man aged in his 70s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His family has been informed.

A memorial service to honour those killed and injured in the Guildford pub bombings has been held to mark the 50th anniversary of the atrocity. The Holy Trinity Church in the Surrey city hosted a service to remember the four soldiers and a civilian killed in the attack on October 5, 1974. Soldiers Caroline Slater, 18, William Forsyth, 18, John Hunter, 17, and Ann Hamilton, 19, and civilian Paul Craig, 21, died in the attack while 65 people were injured.
