KANATA, Ontario — Tuesday brought an end to a fifth consecutive season of misery for Blackhawks fans, the last three of which were somewhat self-inflicted by management with the promise of a bright future. It has been a humbling, demoralizing stretch for the fan base, regardless of the merits of that rebuilding approach within the NHL’s tight-salary-cap world.

KANATA, Ontario — It took until the last night of the season, but Blackhawks star Connor Bedard managed to exceed his rookie goal total. Bedard sniped both top corners of the net in the Hawks’ 4-3 overtime victory Tuesday against the Senators, giving him 23 goals on the year — one higher than last season. They were two of his prettiest career goals, at that. He then set up Frank Nazar for the game-winning goal 48 seconds into overtime, concluding the Hawks’ season on a high note.

MONTREAL — In a game Monday billed as the Canadiens’ biggest in years, it was the Blackhawks who earned arguably their biggest victory in years. Hawks rookie Frank Nazar led a valiant charge inside an electrified Bell Centre, eventually scoring a Patrick Kane-esque goal that nobody noticed in the shootout, to lift the visitors to a 4-3 victory and deny the Canadiens another opportunity to clinch a playoff spot.

The Blackhawks might want to root against themselves in the NHL draft lottery this year. That sounds ridiculous at first, but there’s actually a logical reason. It stems from a rule the league installed in 2021 that prevents any team from moving up in the draft order via lottery draw more than twice in any five-year span. The Hawks obviously moved up in 2023, getting the No. 1 pick with the third-highest odds.
