    BELOIT ‒ Deborah J. Helm was appointed Wednesday night to fill a vacancy on the West Branch Local Board of Education. Helm, 61, replaces Aaron Hawk who resigned April 16 for family reasons. She was one of eight applicants for the open seat. Helm has worked 30 years for Crandall Medical Center, and her duties have included managing technical operations, educating staff and supervising nurses. All of her children have graduated from West Branch High School, according to a district press release.

    ALLIANCE ‒ Republican incumbents are cruising to victory in two contested races in Tuesday's primary election for Alliance City Council. As of 9:20 p.m., a majority of precincts have reported unofficial results to the board of elections in Stark County and Mahoning County for both races. Kris Bugara (31%), Jennifer Kiko (26%) and Phillip Mastroianni (25%) were fending off challenger Rev. Joshua Smith (18%) for the three at-large seats.

    ALLIANCE ‒ Mayor Andy Grove released his proposed choices for the city's new Housing Oversight Board. It left some stunned on Monday night. City Council established the five-member board on April 21 with changes to rental regulations and gave Grove the authority to appoint members. The five members should be the mayor, safety-service director, a council member, a local landlord and a local tenant. The board members will serve three-year terms.

    ALLIANCE ‒ The city's Fire Department has tagged abandoned commercial structures with red placards that warn first responders of possible dangers. The signs started appearing in recent months − bold, square placards nailed to brick or wood, stamped with a date − mostly on downtown buildings. There are a few elsewhere. The warnings are clear: Either the place is structurally safe or its not, helping first responders determine how they should handle any potential fire there.

    EAST PALESTINE ‒ East Palestine City School District says Norfolk Southern has broken promises and betrayed students after the 2023 train derailment. In a lawsuit filed Wednesday, district officials say the Atlanta-based railway company has failed to reimburse the district for emergency response costs and the use of school facilities, and has reneged on a promise to relocate and rebuild the district's athletic facilities, along with a community wellness center.
