Do this job long enough and at some point, you will write a story involving a veteran. But interviewing a combat veteran can be like pulling teeth. The more death and mayhem they witnessed, the more reluctant they are to talk about it. Some are tortured by dreams which rise unabated; their waking hours punctuated by memories that can be triggered by a mere sound. To a person, they will tell you that the real heroes are the ones who never made it back.
