The 1425 Scalp Ave. Big Lots store "is scheduled to reopen in June," according to an email received Tuesday from the press office at Variety Wholesalers, which recently purchased about 200 former Big Lots stores in bankruptcy proceedings. Next fall, the Conemaugh Township Area School District will say “bienvenidos," or welcome, to Shade-Central City High School students who want to learn or improve their Spanish language skills. The two districts are forming "Bridge the Ridge," an educational partnership similar to what the schools already have with their extracurricular programs. The partnership, at its outset, will allow a group of senior high students at both schools to attend two classes each day together.

The start of the 78th annual Pennsylvania Maple Festival brought visitors to Maple Festival Park in Meyersdale last weekend to enjoy good food and a variety of activities and events held despite some rainy weather. "Our first day was successful. We had a very nice crowd visiting the festival and enjoying the activities at the park and the quilt show," said Robin Deal, president of the festival's board of directors.
