One of the wettest Mays in the last 1 ½ centuries has eliminated extreme drought in western North Dakota, though the region remains mired in lesser forms of dryness that are expected to linger. Dickinson received 5.9 inches of rain during the month, 3.35 inches above normal. It was the fifth-wettest May in the city's history, according to National Weather Service rankings that date to 1893. Smoky skies and potentially unhealthy air are forecast to return to North Dakota this weekend, as wildfires once again rage across Canada. The Canadian province of Manitoba, part of which borders North Dakota, has declared a state of emergency due to nearly two dozen wildfires that have forced the evacuations of nearly 17,000 people across several communities, according to The Associated Press. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is sending in military to help.
