    MASSENA — Several students who offered their views of patriotism through their art have been recognized by Massena’s VFW Post 1143 Auxiliary. VFW Auxiliary Scholarship Chair Frances Marcil said five entries were from J.W. Leary Junior High School in Massena, 15 were from Franklin Academy in Malone, and four were from the Brushton-Moira Central School District. She said the judges for this year’s competition “were absolutely in awe” of the work that was presented by the students.

    MASSENA — A youth-oriented event envisioned by a longtime member of the Massena Joint Recreation Commission more than two decades ago returns this Saturday. The 26th annual Ted Kot Kids Free Fishing Day for ages 15 and under will be held rain or shine at the Wilson Hill causeway in Louisville. Registration is from 8:30 to 11 a.m., with fishing from 9 a.m. to noon. “They can register all the way up to 11 o’clock. People don’t need to come early,” Recreation Director Michael P. McCabe said.
