EUGENE, Ore. — The big, beautiful budget bill is not so pretty to Oregon's Democrats. Senator Jeff Merkley criticized the budget resolution that passed the House on Tuesday without any Democrats voting in favor. That budget called for two-trillion dollars in spending cuts - nearly half of that addressing healthcare, including Medicaid, which about a fifth of all Americans use.

A bill to crack down on illegal immigration is one step closer to passing Congress. The Senate has voted to begin debate on the Laken Riley Act, which passed the house earlier this week with limited support. It's named after the Georgia student killed by a Venezuelan migrant last year. Democrats, including Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, say they will only allow it to pass if they can make bipartisan amendments to it. "As it's written I will not support this bill," said Senator Merkley.
