Delta community continues road to recovery following tornado

DELTA, Mo. (KFVS) - The hard work continues in Delta, Missouri as folks are cleaning up and working to rebuild their homes after an EF2 tornado struck last week. Lisa Mansker and her fiancé were one of several people who were faced with the extent of damage to their home. “We ain’t even lived here six months, you know it was rough,” Mansker said. “We struggled a little bit, I don’t think either of us have actually processed it.”She said it is rough coming to a place that doesn’t feel like home.

NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS) - Across the Heartland, folks are seeing flooded roads, water rescues and breached levees. Related stories“It’s been a very, very busy four or five days.”That is how New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson described the past week with the amount of heavy rain and storms the area has seen. But he says luckily, things are starting to slow down just a bit. “Everybody’s been working really hard to make the best out of a bad situation,” Sheriff Higgerson said.

Heartland News caught up with Cape Girardeau County Emergency Management Operations Director Sam Herndon. Herndon says if you want to assist, you can do that through monetary donations, supplies, or just spending some time helping with cleaning and removing debris.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Hundreds of classic cars will soon cruise through Cape Girardeau as the Corvette Caravan is set to make its return on August 27. And today, volunteers laid out their plans. The last time the Corvette Caravan rolled through Cape was back in 2019. And now years later, nearly 800 corvettes are expected to line the streets next Tuesday.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - After seeing an increase in vehicle thefts, the Cape Girardeau Police Department is urging residents to be cautious when it comes to protecting their vehicles. In the past thirty days, Officer Bobby Newton said they have taken 17 reports of stolen vehicles in the area. He said it is not common to see this many vehicle thefts in such a short number of days.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Back-to-school preparations are in full swing as many families are getting ready to send their kids back to school. On Thursday, August 8, two organizations came together in Cape Girardeau to host their first Back-to-School giveaway for those in the community. East Missouri Action Agency and the Community Partnership of Southeast Missouri handed out backpacks, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, and other school supplies to nearly 70 families.

SIKESTON, Mo. (KFVS) - If you have a home in Missouri damaged by a tornado back in May, you can now talk face-to-face with disaster recovery specialists in the Bootheel. On Thursday, August 1, a Disaster Recovery Center opened in Sikeston to give storm victims the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Claudia Anderson is the Public Information Officer with the SBA. Anderson says it’s important all residents receive one-on-one assistance.
