Paula Smith and her family own a home in Esquimalt. It’s currently getting a makeover with a decluttering and a new paint job. “We’re confident that if we time it right and price it right, that we will hit the market and some other family will make this home their own,” said Smith. The family hopes to have it listed by the end of the month.

Joshua Farquharson, the general manager of Windsor Plywood Victoria, said he’s beginning to see the repercussions of the trade war. “We’ve had tariffs now on three orders, but I think there is more coming down the pipeline,” said Farquharson.

The Filipino community on Southern Vancouver Island is mourning after the horrific attack on Saturday night in Vancouver at the Lapu Lapu Filipino Festival. An SUV plowed through a pedestrian-packed street, injuring dozens and killing 11. The oldest victim was 65 while the youngest was just five years old. Melissa Badua, president of the Bayanihan Cultural Housing Society, says everyone in her community is feeling overwhelmed.

Colwood resident Sabrina Mori is one of more than an estimated 700,000 British Columbians that is not attached to a family physician, although she is optimistic. “I’m on the provincial list in the case something comes up,” said Mori, referring to the Health Connect Registry, which matches people with doctors who are taking new patients when spots become available. So far, she hasn’t had any luck.

Kirstin Beardsley, the CEO of Food Banks Canada, says food insecurity is not being discussed – despite repeated reports about an alarming increase in foodbank use across the country. “What we’re not hearing is any party take a proactive approach to reducing food insecurity in Canada,” said Beardsley.
