The village of Frankfort launched its annual Reindeer on the Green event in 2019, the last year the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce sponsored the decades-long Christkindl celebration. This year the village transforms Reindeer on the Green into Christkindl Weekend from Dec. 14 to 15 in downtown Frankfort. “There was some discussion over the last few years about bringing it back so the village decided to take over and coordinate the event,” said Sue Lynchey, village events coordinator.

There are only two real seasons in America — the 61 days from the end of October to New Years Day and one for the rest of the year. It starts with Halloween which, through the years and with the power of marketing, has become an undeclared national holiday. The National Retail Federation estimates we will spend about $11.6 billion on food, candy and costumes for next week’s Halloween day festivities.

The Rich Township Senior Center is preparing to move out of Park Forest. Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan said the Shirley Green Senior Center on Liberty Street in the downtown area will relocate to a 5-acre site near the Matteson Village Hall. The new location, we are told, is pristine and has never felt the touch of a shovel. A groundbreaking is scheduled this summer for a complex that will include the administrative offices, general services and a more inclusive senior center.

Harvey residents pleaded Thursday for the city and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to consider alternate locations for a flood relief basin, saying when there are so many vacant lots in town, it is unfair longtime residents will be forced from their homes. “A lot of them are 70 or 80 years old, where are they going to restart their lives?” said resident Chapelle Hooks.
