Ken Gagner is no meteorologist, but he knows to forecast extra cost savings for his school district on sunny days. The superintendent got one of those days before Braham Area Schools’ graduation ceremony last week. On the roof above Gagner’s office, solar panels soaked up the sun’s rays, generating electricity measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One keystroke on Gagner’s computer gave him real-time updates, a valuable tool for teaching students about renewable energy.

Like most parents, Mallory Shlaffman hadn’t heard of congenital cytomegalovirus until her child screened positive for it. Her daughter, Laura, born in 2018, was tested for what’s known as CMV because she was born below the 10th percentile for weight. Back then, only babies meeting certain criteria received screenings for the virus, which can cause health problems that range from hearing loss to seizures to impaired vision. Identifying CMV early prompted early interventions for Laura.

Nine months into her job with the Le Sueur Police Department, activating a body-worn camera feels second nature to Janet Ireland. The officer slots the camera into its case on her vest at the beginning of each shift. Wherever Ireland goes, the camera is ready to roll, documenting her work in the southern Minnesota city. Coming from her past job in a department that didn’t yet have body cams, Ireland said the technology benefits both her and the public.

Gail Donkers remembers struggling to buy groceries for her young family on a tight budget. Public assistance funds helped the southern Minnesota corn, soybean and livestock farmer. Donkers said she used federal help to buy peanut butter, baby formula and other essentials for her household. She’s proud, not ashamed, of how much public assistance helped her family.

Lukas Leaf has been camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for decades, but he fears that pressure on the environmental protections that have long kept the famed Minnesota waterway from nearby mining is close to a tipping point. “We’re near a point of no return,” said Leaf, the executive director at Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters.
