MANKATO — A group of Mankato pastors, Minnesota State University professors and human rights activists went to the region's largest immigrant detention center Thursday with both questions and statements. They wanted to assess how detainees were being treated, the conditions they were subjected to, the availability of food and medical care and the options they have to communicate with the outside world. The religious leaders portrayed it as both a sacred duty and a civic responsibility.

Representatives of local medical clinics and Mankato schools shared stories of the negative impact of vaping and other nicotine use on the physical and mental health of local youth. They passed some of the most popular products around the conference room table.

A new study indicates that a significant amount of our microplastic and nanoplastic intake comes from bottled water. Alas, the former city manager appears to have been ahead of the curve when he banned bottled water from City Hall. I’m curious: Does the filtration system at the Water Treatment Plant filter out nanoparticles less than 200nm? Is the high concentration of nanoparticles in human brains what’s responsible for the phenomenon of the patients running the asylum?

MANKATO — There was no cheering, no whistling, no boisterous standing ovation when the Mankato City Council this week passed a vehicle noise ordinance. Instead, community members who had been calling for action on Jake-braking trucks and other loud vehicles since 2023 gave the council a brief, muted and clearly grateful round of applause on Monday.
