The Anne Arundel Board of Education is made up of seven adults and one student member, who is elected by students and then appointed by the governor. School board members hold executive, legislative and quasi-judicial power. The seven adult members each represent a county councilmanic district. The board recently transitioned to an elected body and for the first time, all seven seats will be up for election in November 2024.

In addition to the wide range of private and independent child care options within the area, Anne Arundel County offers several public options for parents of school-age children. The county operates 50 state-licensed child care centers, the majority of which are located within public school buildings, said Jessica Leyes, director Anne Arundel County Recreation & Parks, who oversees the child care division.

While the selection for young learners is even broader, there are more than a half-dozen schools offering education from a young age through high school graduation in central and north Anne Arundel. AnnapolisSt. Mary’s Elementary and High SchoolThis school in downtown Annapolis serves kindergarten through high school. It is part of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

The 2024-25 school year begins Aug. 28 in Anne Arundel County and, barring bad weather, the year will end for students June 13, 2025. Anne Arundel County Public Schools will open before Labor Day this year. Students in first through fifth grades and sixth through ninth will return Monday, Aug. 26. After sixth and ninth graders have a day to adapt to their new schools, students in grades seven through 12 return Aug. 27.
