They will then vote on their favorites to name the signature cocktail of the annual Citrus Royal Ball set for Saturday, Jan. 25. The sip-off is set for Friday, Jan.

Located in the library’s teen section, the shelf is stocked with personal care items that teens can take, with no questions asked. Middle schooler Delilah Mondragon picked up supplies on Tuesday as she prepared to head back to school from winter break. Mondragon said she knows the holidays can be rough for some families, and the shelf can help.

inNews - LocalA 24-hour makeover is underway at the Boys & Girls Club of McAllen’s Glen E. & Rita K. Roney Center. According to a news release, the Aaron’s Company – which owns Aaron’s Rent to Own — provided $20,000 to the center. As part of the renovation, new furniture was built and new electronics were installed. Teens played a role in the renovation. “No adults were involved in the making of this teen center,” Boys & Girls Club of McAllen CEO Dalinda Alcantar said.

A new program at Mission Consolidated School District is helping students with special needs gain a little independence. The program is called Titan's Program. "I like to stock the stuff and put things where they belong," Titan student Jamilee Hernandez said. It's why Hernandez works at HEB every day. Her gig is courtesy of Titan's Program. "We do the bagging, we do returns, we clean, we ask the manager if they need help," Hernandez said. About 21 students are in the Titan's Program.

Students from Mercedes Academic Academy are in the Christmas spirit. They're collecting gifts for people at the Mid-Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Senior resident Maria Cantu expressed how happy and grateful she feels when students visit her during the holidays. "I feel lonely sometimes, and I like to have company with me," Cantu said. That's where the Santa for Seniors project at Mercedes Academic Academy comes into play.

Those are just some of what the public can expect as part of the McAllen Holiday Parade set for Saturday, Dec. 7. It’s a holiday event known for extravagance, and with $1.2 million, it has the price tag to prove it. McAllen Assistant City Manager Joe Vera said the cost was fully covered by the parade’s 50 sponsors.
New Hidalgo County health and human services director discusses plans for the department

A new face is leading the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department. Rio Grande Valley native Dairen Sarmiento Rangel is taking over the role, and said she's looking forward to bringing changes to the department. “We've provided more training, more education,” Sarmiento Rangel said. Sarmiento Rangel has served as the department’s assistant director since January 2021, according to a news release from the county.
