North Carolina unveiled one of its first electric vehicle charging stations at a rest area in Alamance County Wednesday. The state Department of Transportation held a ribbon-cutting at a rest area on Interstate 40/85 near Burlington. Another charging station will be located near Benson at the junction of Interstates 95 and 40. Those locations were chosen because they are routes heavily trafficked by commuters. Electric car owner Jack Martin said he’s looking forward to expanded charging options.

North Carolina and Virginia will get over $48 million in federal grant money to develop a high-speed rail link between Raleigh and Washington, D.C.U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the funding Tuesday. The goal is ultimately to spur high-speed rail development throughout the southeast, which has seen a population boom in recent decades.

Mitt Romney spoke to thousands of supporters at Asheville's civic center Thursday evening, just before his running mate was scheduled to debate Vice President Joe Biden. Romney promised to provide tax relief for the middle class if he wins his bid for the White House, and slammed President Barack Obama's record on jobs, debt and the economy. "If President Obama were able to get re-elected, why, he would raise taxes. He’s made it very clear," Romney said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a man in the shooting of his ex-girlfriend and her co-worker, who were both found dead inside the woman’s home early Tuesday. Jacquece Forest, 28, is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Jennifer Smith and Luc Eric Gonzalez. Both Smith and Gonzalez were 25. Smith, who was originally from the Siler City area, called police to tell them she thought she had seen her ex-boyfriend in the woods behind her house.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for a man missing since his jon boat sank near the New River Inlet in North Carolina on Saturday, but local emergency crews continued the rescue effort Sunday. Two men from the Benson area were out floundering in the boat Friday night when waters got rough and the boat tipped over, an Onslow County spokeswoman said. One man was able to swim to a floating barrel to stay above water, but he lost sight of the other man, who authorities said was 25.
