    On a recent balmy morning, members of the Greater Akron Audubon Society gathered at Brust Park in Munroe Falls. Armed with binoculars, the group had a mission: the summer bird census. Every June since 1978, chapter members have spread across Summit County for 10 days to count all the birds they see and hear. This year’s summer bird census was June 6-15. The goal of the breeding bird census is to track trends in the types and numbers of species.

    Here are three things to do in and around Akron this weekend. The University of Akron Arts Academy will stage three performances of Disney’s “The Aristocats KIDS” Friday and Saturday. The 45-minute production is based on the 1970 Disney film and features students from the university’s Summer Arts Camp. Performances take place on campus at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Guzzetta Hall. Tickets are $11.28.

    Before “Dear Enemy” made its debut in Akron in 1925, the stage was set for the musical to be a smash hit. “The greatest theatrical innovation on record here in the past 100 years,” reads a July 1925 advertisement. “A theatrical attraction … that should attract thousands of visitors,” reads an Akron Beacon Journal article from the same month. But the show — a romantic comedy involving lovers on opposing sides during the American Revolution — wasn’t a guaranteed win, Joseph Rubin explained.

    A collection of Salvador Dalí paintings is making its U.S. debut — and Northeast Ohio residents will get to see it first. “Dalí Beyond Time: Fashioning the Future” includes six original paintings by the surrealist master. It opens Thursday at Peg’s Gallery in Hudson. The exhibit is a collaboration between the gallery, Kent State’s School of Fashion Design & Merchandising and the Belgian textile company Scabal.

    Here are three things to do in and around Akron this weekend. The City of Akron’s free Summer Concert Series kicks off this week with shows at parks and community centers around town. In honor of the city’s bicentennial, the first and last weeks of the series will feature festivals before the concerts. On Friday, head to Ellet Community Center for yard games, face painting and food, plus music from Kent band American Steal.
