Vinnie Cimino may run one of Cleveland’s most popular restaurants, but make no mistake: He’s a die-hard Akronite. “I scream about Akron as much as I can, even though I work in Cleveland,” said Cimino, head chef at Cordelia. “Akron will always have my heart. And as a kid from Akron [and] somebody who still lives in Akron, Swensons has always been a big part of my life and my culture.”Now, Cimino is making his own mark on the beloved local hamburger chain.

If you’re near downtown Akron on June 3 and 4, be sure to look up. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the first Goodyear Blimp flight, three airships will fly over the city Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Wingfoot One, the Akron-based airship, will join its blimp brethren, the Florida-based Wingfoot Two and the California-based Wingfoot Three. Wingfoot One will be decked out in the same black and gray color scheme as Pilgrim, Goodyear’s first blimp.

Despite the up and down nature of our current weather, summer in Ohio is just around the corner. And with that comes plenty of things to do. I compiled 70 events happening in and around Akron from June through September. It has a bit of everything: long-running favorites such as Rhythm on the River and the Italian-American Festival, special bicentennial events and a packed Blossom Music Festival schedule from the Cleveland Orchestra. Speaking of events, Thursday is the first Sojourner Truth Day.

Weathervane Playhouse is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. And with nine decades comes a lot of paper work, from Playbills and photographs to newsletters and promotional posters. “So many,” said Mat Cruz when asked how many boxes contain Weathervane’s paper ephemera. “There’s boxes upon boxes of photographs. There’s plenty of loose photographs as well.
