ASHBURN, Va. - Tyler Owens' athletic gifts and exploits are out of this world, even if he questions it. At the East-West Shrine Bowl, the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder was the showcase's fastest player at 21.55 mph. Owens doesn't know his maxed-out weightlifting figure but says he can deadlift 600 pounds "easily." His 41-inch vertical leap at the combine led all safeties, and his 79 1/8 wingspan ranked third among draft insider Dane Brugler's top 21 safety prospects.

A pair of former UConn football players, Christian Haynes and Eric Watts, participated in the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, where they met with and worked out for NFL scouts, coaches and executives. Haynes, a four-year starter and an AP All-American on the offensive line in each of the last two seasons, has seen his draft stock improve since UConn's season ended as he put together an impressive performance in the February Senior Bowl.

One of the premiere events in the professional football offseason is the NFL Combine. A total of 321 NFL hopefuls head to Indianapolis to help or hurt their possible football careers without playing any actual football. Instead, they will run, jump and try not to hit cones to get a call from an NFL organization. With 257 picks in this draft, not everyone will get that chance, so standing out here is important for some.

The NFL Combine wipes the slate clean for NFL prospects. It's a place where film and production and level of competition don't matter. Every player shows up to wear the same spandex uniforms and run all the same drills — a completely even playing field amid a draft process littered with discrepancies elsewhere. It's the perfect opportunity for unproven players to show their potential or for fringe top prospects to lock themselves into the first round.

Cory Schlesinger has been tabbed Assistant Coach, Director of Basketball Health and Performance, while Byron Jones was named Assistant Coach.
