ShareJOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska Army National Guardsman will soon head down to the Lower 48 as part of the federal Southwest Border Mission to support U.S. Customs and Border Protection . The nearly 12-month deployment will bring 20 Alaska-based soldiers and two UH-72A Lakota helicopters to New Mexico. Among the guardsmen are air crews, maintenance technicians, and additional support personnel.

SharePALMER, Alaska (KTUU) - Southcentral Alaska’s only USDA-certified meat processing facility – Alaska Meat – is shutting down. The owner, Todd Elsberry of North Pole, confirmed the news in a phone call with Alaska’s News Source on Thursday morning. Elsberry said the plant is no longer accepting any animals for processing, and it will close its doors for good once it finishes processing 4-H animals by Nov. 1.

KING SALMON, Alaska (KTUU/Gray News) - Alaska’s favorite pastime is just a week away, as Fat Bear Week returns to Katmai National Park and Preserve. The annual chunky championship has people vote on which bears they think will pack on the most pounds in preparation for hibernation, while simultaneously engaging the public with wildlife through the park’s webcams. Last year, nearly 1.4 million votes were cast by people in over 100 countries.

ShareWASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) - Gov. Mike Dunleavy — alongside fitness guru Jake Steinfeld — cut the ribbon Monday morning on a new fitness center at Knik Charter School. The school was one of three Alaska schools — and the only Matanuska-Susitna Borough school — chosen to receive the donated workout equipment valued at $100,000. Mears Middle School and Romig Middle School in Anchorage were the other two chosen for the award by the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils.

PALMER, Alaska (KTUU/Gray News) - A family in Alaska is mourning the loss of their son who was shot and killed while working at an area gas station over Labor Day weekend. Donald and Tanya Williams, the father and stepmother of Steven Williams, 22, said they are devastated. “[We] didn’t want to believe it was true,” Donald Williams said. The Williams described their son as a good, kind-hearted person who would do anything for anyone and that his life was just getting started.
