A second man has been arrested in connection with August 2024 shootings that left four people dead at Pleasant Grove Park. Andres Jared Guzman, 18, of 11 E. Creekview Drive S.W. in Rome, was charged Tuesday by the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office with murder (non-family, gun). In a press release Wednesday, the sheriff's office said Guzman was arrested in connection with the shootings.

Last fall, the Whitfield Remembrance Project held an event at the unmarked grave of Lon McCamy to bring attention to the last man believed to be lynched in Whitfield County. On Saturday, the group, which was formed to promote racial reconciliation, will further honor McCamy's memory when they travel by chartered bus to the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Sites in Montgomery, Alabama, to deliver soil from the site of McCamy's lynching.

A Whitfield County man has been charged with the Saturday murder of a man on Princeton Way. J. Mayelo Puentes, 28, of 105 Princeton Way, Dalton, is charged with murder (non-family gun) and possession of a firearm/knife during the commission of a felony for the death of Ulysis Garcia, 38. According to a statement from Sheriff Darren Pierce, deputies received a call around 7:23 a.m. regarding a shooting on Princeton Way.
