The Lakes Hockey Academy is in year three since its inception in 2021 and has continued to gain popularity with each year. The LHA is led by former Brainerd boys hockey standout Mitch McLain and several other former Brainerd hockey standouts including Cole Smith, Mitch Andres, Eric Pohlkamp, and Joey Frazer. On ice workouts are just one aspect of the Lakes Hockey Academy.

Warroad’s Jayson Shaugabay has had an illustrious high school career that includes winning the 2023 Mr. Hockey award for the top senior in the state, breaking Warroad’s all-time scoring record held by T.J. Oshie, and leading the state in assists. Later this week, Shaugabay is expected to get selected somewhere in the third or fourth round of the 2023 NHL Draft.

For the first time in program history, Fosston baseball is the Class A State Champions. The Greyhounds defeated Lyle-Pacelli at CHS Field in St. Paul in a thrilling 3-2 game to clinch the state title. The game was tied in the second when senior Zach Theis reached on a fielding error and allowed Brecken Levin to score the first run of the game. In the 4th, it was the same combo of Theis and Levin resulting in another Greyhound run.

Jade Rypkema may as well close out her illustrious high school running career with seven state championships before it’s all said and done. But the Nevis seniors’ story isn’t one where she began running competitively at an extremely young age and has been working towards the goal of seven state championships since day one. Rypkema actually didn’t begin running until middle school. In gym class in sixth grade, her P.E. teacher and now long-distance coach Tom Stambaugh noticed Rypkema.
