PILLAGER – Joie Koll allowed only six hits and one walk while striking out 27 and was supported by an offense that pounded out 21 hits as the Menahga softball team opened the season with a Park Region Conference doubleheader sweep over Pillager on Tuesday, April 8. Koll threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 as the Braves won the opener 6-1 and scattered five hits while striking out 13 as Menahga completed the sweep with an 8-2 win in the second game.

PARK RAPIDS – Even though Jeb Sanford was hoping for a few more wins, he was satisfied with how competitive the Park Rapids boys basketball team was in his first season as head coach. The Panthers went 7-8 in their first season in the Heart O’Lakes Conference while finishing with a 12-15 overall mark. Park Rapids also earned a home game to open the Section 8AA tournament.

BEMIDJI – United North Central won two events in the girls meet and Nevis won a pair of events in the boys meet during the Beaver Relays indoor track and field meet at the Gillett Wellness Center on the campus of Bemidji State University on Tuesday, April 8. In the 12-team boys meet, UNC finished third with 42 points behind a winning effort by Riley Livingston, Matthew Treinen, Gravin Schneider and Elliot Roth in the 4 x 800-meter relay (9:55.90).

ROCHESTER – Five local girls placed at the Northland Youth Wrestling Association state tournament at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center on April 4-6. Park Rapids’ Espen Miller was the runner-up in the grades 5-6 85-pound division, Tina Hoeffner placed third in the grades 3-4 150-pound bracket and Bailey Bishop took fourth in the grades 3-4 64-pound division.

MENAHGA – Led by a talented group of seniors, the Menahga girls basketball team fulfilled season goals by winning the Park Region Conference title and contending for the Section 8AA championship. MENAHGA – Kris Koll sees a promising future for the Menahga baseball team. Koll, who served as the Braves’ junior high coach last season, takes over as the head coach this spring. Focusing on the basics and building a successful program are Koll’s main goals. “My goal for this Menahga program is to build upon fundamentals as well as team unity and hard work,” said Koll. “There is lots of talent to go around with these young men.

NEVIS – Head coach Larry Franck believes the return of four proven pitchers and a lineup featuring nine seniors will make the Nevis baseball team a serious contender to battle for Northland Conference and Section 5A titles this spring. Returning to claim their starting spots are seniors Marshall Kalm (pitcher, third base), Eli Klimek (catcher, pitcher), Devan Lindow (shortstop, pitcher), Eli Lindow (first base, center field) and Caleb Norton (first base, outfield).

PARK RAPIDS – The Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team entered the season focusing on skill development. With a young squad, any games the Panthers won would be a bonus. In terms of improving skills and winning games, the season was a huge success. With only six players returning who scored points last season and six other players who saw varsity minutes, head coach Bill Moore knew his team would have to focus on the fundamentals to be successful.
