PARK RAPIDS – The Park Rapids 18U fastpitch softball team opened the season by sweeping a doubleheader against Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on June 3. Park Rapids followed an 11-1 win in five innings with an 11-5 victory in three innings to begin league play. Maddison Shepherd threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as Park Rapids used a seven-run second inning to win the opener.

FARGO, N.D. – Seven area runners competed in the 22nd Essentia Health Fargo Marathon and Half Marathon on Saturday, May 31. Osage’s Brian Deitchler, age 30, finished 719th out of 1,545 runners overall, 481st out of 904 men and 129th out of 200 runners in the men’s 30-39 age division with a 26.2-mile time of 4:28.45 in the marathon. Tucker Ringhand of Ironton won the marathon in 2:26.20. There were six local runners in the half marathon.

BEMIDJI – Natalie Martin wasn’t surprised with how well her first varsity season as a member of the Park Rapids girls golf team went. The seventh grader was the Panthers’ No. 1 golfer all season, posting a 79.9 average entering the Section 8AA tournament. Martin put the finishing touches on a successful season by qualifying for the state Class AA tournament. Martin was the runner-up at the Section 8AA tournament at the Bemidji Town and Country Club on June 2-3.

BEMIDJI – Park Rapids’ Jack Christensen and Aiden Maanum advanced to the final round of the Section 8AA boys golf tournament at the Bemidji Town & Country Club on Tuesday, June 3. Maanum tied for 23rd place with a season best 82 (including a 38 on the front side and a 44 on the back) while Christensen tied for 40th place with rounds of 41 and 44 for an 85 during Day 1 of the section tournament on Monday, June 2.
