PARK RAPIDS – Staples-Motley’s Carter White carded a 2-under-par 70 while Pequot Lakes claimed the team title with a 302 during the Park Rapids Heart O’Lakes Invitational boys golf tournament at Headwaters Golf Club on Friday, May 2. Park Rapids carded a season best of 353 on its home course to place 12th in the 20-team field.

CASS LAKE – Walker-Hackensack-Akeley posted the top five scores in winning a Northern Pines Conference boys golf meet at Sandtrap Golf Course on Thursday, May 1. Gus Pederson led the field with a 35 on the par-36 front side as the Wolves carded a four-golfer score of 145. Deer River followed with a 167 while United North Central was third with a 172. Nevis finished eighth with a 222.
Baseball: Close losses leave Menahga with 2-7 record to start season

Losing several close games has the Menahga baseball team off to a 2-7 start this season. The Braves opened the season with a 4-1 Section 8AA loss to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on April 10. Creed Koll took the loss. In the Park Region Conference opener on April 11, the Braves lost to Wadena-Deer Creek 9-3 as Alvin Salmen was the losing pitcher. Fordyce Johnson (2-4) and Koll (2-4, two RBI) led Menahga’s seven-hit attack. Sebeka swept the Braves 4-3 and 11-1 in a conference doubleheader on April 15.

BEMIDJI – Bemidji used five singles, four walks and an error to score all its runs in the first inning in a 10-4 fastpitch softball win over Park Rapids on Thursday, May 1. Allie Michaelson walked and scored in the second while singles by Allie Rowland and Vivian Shepersky led to another run in the third for Park Rapids. The Panthers scored their final two runs in the sixth on a double by Michaelson and singles by Adrienne Cook, Madi Himango and Anna Yliniemi.
Softball: Nevis drops trio of conference games

The Nevis fastpitch softball team suffered three Upper Mississippi Conference losses to fall to 3-3 in conference play and 5-4 overall. Blackduck scored twice in the second inning and twice in the sixth in a 4-0 win over the Tigers at Blackduck on Wednesday, April 30. Peyton Offerdahl recorded eight strikeouts in the loss. Northome-Kelliher swept a doubleheader at Nevis on Thursday, May 1. The Mustangs followed a 15-4 win in the first game with a 6-1 victory in the second game.

NEVIS – Eli Klimek hit a solo home run and allowed two unearned runs for the win as Nevis defeated Bagley 5-2 in a Northland Conference baseball game on April 29. The Tigers scored a run in the first inning when Devan Lindow was hit by a pitch and scored on Marshall Kalm’s RBI single. A three-run third pushed the lead to 4-0. Eli Lindow doubled and Klimek singled to set up an RBI single by Kalm.
Al Potter, Eric Niemi to be inducted into PR Athletic Hall of Fame

PARK RAPIDS – An athletic director who started the Park Rapids All Sports Banquet and a wrestler who was a state runner-up will be the newest members to join the Panther Athletic Hall of Fame. Al Potter and Eric Niemi will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the 48th All Sports Banquet on May 16. Tickets for the banquet can be purchased at the Area High School office. The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. in the Area High School gym.
Girls Golf: Park Rapids places 7th in HOL meet

PELICAN RAPIDS – Barnesville posted a 20-stroke win in a Heart O’Lakes Conference girls golf meet at Birchwood Golf Course on Tuesday, April 29. The Trojans carded a 361 team score as Park Rapids finished seventh with a 409. Natalie Martin led the Panthers with an 80 for third place on the par-70 course with Madison Laferriere’s 102, Elle Tostenson’s 112 and Kate Dravis’ 115 completing the team score. Hawley’s Sophie Cook earned medalist honors with a 78.
Clay Target: Park Rapids opens season by topping conference standings

The Park Rapids Clay Dusters opened the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League spring season by topping the seven-team Class 4A Conference 5 standings. Park Rapids scored 2,791 points to edge out Spring Grove (2,780) and Frazee (2,742). Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (1,988), Isle-Onamia (1,446), Wabasso (1,236) and Redwood Valley (1,213) followed. Avery Kapaun led Park Rapids with a 24.00 average to tie for third place in the conference.
Track and Field: Area athletes compete in Elite Meet at NDSU

FARGO, N.D. – The Park Rapids boys and girls track and field teams qualified a large contingent of athletes to compete in the Fargo Elite Meet at North Dakota State University on April 26. Park Rapids competed in 14 events in placing sixth in the boys meet with 36 points and had entries in 12 events in finishing seventh in the girls meet with 30 points. Fargo Davies won the boys title with 109 points and Moorhead captured the girls title with 97.5 points.
