    DETROIT LAKES — Wind surged on a sunny day at the Detroit Lakes tennis courts as the Lakers’ boys tennis team welcomed Central Lakes Conference rival Willmar to town. Detroit Lakes picked up their fifth win of the season as they handled the Cardinals 6-1. While both teams battled wind gusts over 35 miles per hour, the Lakers proved to be too much on their home courts. The Lakers improved their record to 5-13 on the season and boast a 3-3 record in the month of May.

    DETROIT LAKES — To be the best, you have to learn from the best. And that’s exactly what the Detroit Lakes boys golf team had been up to this past week. The Lakers hosted a handful of the best teams in the state for the annual, two-day Northwest Classic at Detroit Country Club on May 9-10. Detroit Lakes finished in third place with a final score of 603, shooting a 301 after Round 1 and a 302 following Round 2.

    DETROIT LAKES — A pollinator garden that also serves as an outdoor classroom ... that's the concept behind a project slated for installation outside the Detroit Lakes Boys and Girls Club next month. A collaborative project between the Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts Troop 674 and the Prairie Woods Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America (also referred to as "the Ikes"), the garden classroom will also include an original piece of sculpture created by Troop 674 member Peyton Malecka.

    PERHAM — The sun was shining at Arvig Park as the Perham softball team welcomed Detroit Lakes to town for the 2025 iteration of the Highway-10 rivalry game on Friday, May 9. The Yellowjackets persevered as they took down the Lakers 5-3 thanks to excellent pitching and defense in the seventh inning. Detroit Lakes had a number of chances to drive in runs but they couldn’t record a timely hit. Joslyn Griffin shut the door on the Lakers' comeback in the top of the seventh.

    Richard “Dick” Elliot Westlund Sr., 84, of Lake Park, MN, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Essentia Health-Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes, MN, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Dick was born August 23, 1940, in Cormorant Township, one of six children of Albert and Alice (Teigen) Westlund. He attended school at District 10 until 6th grade and then attended Lake Park for 7th grade. Dick began working at the age of 13 in the potato house in Lake Park.
