DETROIT LAKES — The Detroit Lakes girls golf team has been on a near-perfect run since the start of the 2024 season. Swinging into 2025 with three consecutive first-place finishes, the Lakers attributed their dominance to a state championship work ethic and competition among themselves. Detroit Lakes continued its winning ways at its first Central Lakes Conference meet at Detroit Country Club on Monday, April 21.

DETROIT LAKES — Though he first started shooting photographs on a film camera back in the 1980s, it wasn't until he retired from a 40-year career as a Fargo educator that Lowell Wolff refocused on photography. "I spent 40 years with Fargo Public Schools, 25 of them as assistant superintendent," says Wolff, whose work is on display at the Detroit Lakes Public Library through the end of May.

DETROIT LAKES — The city of Detroit Lakes will be installing a camera at City Park following concerns about park behavior brought forward by Park View Street resident Lynn Schulberg at the March 11 City Council meeting. Schulberg first addressed the council about City Park in 2023, upset by some of the behavior she and her neighbors were witnessing and at times on the receiving end of, according to Schulberg.

DETROIT LAKES — In what one longtime board member called an “internal coup,” a bare majority of the Pelican River Watershed Board last month unexpectedly voted to essentially gut a big chunk of the district’s regulatory authority and turn it over to zoning offices in Becker County and Detroit Lakes. On the majority side were Board Vice President Laurie Olson, secretary Chris Jasken, treasurer Charles Jasken and manager Scott Busker.

DETROIT LAKES — The Detroit Lakes boys golf team hosted a boatload of Fargo teams and Pine River-Backus at its Early Bird Invite on Tuesday, April 15, at Lakeview Golf Course. The Lakers braved the windy and cool conditions to secure a first-place finish, shooting a team score of 256. West Fargo finished in second place with a team score of 265. Freshman Tyson Eckhoff shot a team and meet best 5-under-par 59, just two strokes off the course record 57 set in 1997.

DETROIT LAKES — The start to the 2025 campaign hasn’t been kind to the Detroit Lakes boys tennis team. The Lakers boasted a 1-3 record as they welcomed Central Lakes Conference foe Sartell to town on Tuesday, April 15. The Sabres swept the Lakers 7-0 with only one matchup lasting longer than two sets. Dropping to 1-4 on the season, Detroit Lakes head coach Zachary Biggar is looking for answers from his young team. “I feel like we didn’t do anything that amazingly today,” Biggar said.

MOORHEAD — Clay County commissioners have voted to ban the sale of all vaping products and e-cigarettes at stores licensed by the county. During their Tuesday, April 15, meeting, commissioners voted 4-1 to ban the sale of flavored and unflavored vaping products, effective June 1. Commissioners Paul Krabbenhoft, Jenny Mongeau, Kevin Campbell and David Ebinger voted in favor of the ban. Commissioner Ezra Baer cast the lone no vote. Mongeau proposed the county ban the sale of vaping products.

DETROIT LAKES — It was a project that was about five years in the making — or several centuries, depending on your point of view. The new multi-tiered exhibit, "Becker County Natural History Preserved in a Peat Bog," opened this past Thursday, April 10, at the Becker County Museum in Detroit Lakes. It contains the bones of two bison that were unearthed from a real peat bog near Frazee more than five years ago, then donated to the museum.
